NIAC Statement on State Department Decision to Ease Travel Restrictions on Iranian Nationals

It is welcome news that the State Department is planning to ease restrictions on categories of travelers from countries hit hard by COVID-19, including Iranian students ahead of the fall semester. There is a long track record of supporting academic and cultural exchange between the people of the U.S. and Iran, and many members of the Iranian-American community first came to the United States as students. Unfortunately, exchanges between the U.S. and Iran – including Iranian nationals studying in the United States – were put under threat starting with the Trump administration’s first week in office.

NIAC Statement on Biden Admin’s Ban Review

The State Department’s plans for redressing the harm of the Muslim ban was long on excuses and short on relief.
The NO BAN Act: How to Stop Future Abuses of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)

President Biden should be commended for rescinding the Muslim Ban on his first day in office. However, that is a step that could be easily reversed by a successor administration. Congress must clarify that the President does not have a blank check to discriminate on the basis of religious background or national origin:
NIAC Letter to State Department on the Muslim Ban

Washington, D.C. – President Joe Biden’s repeal of the Muslim Ban on day one of his presidency was a huge step in the right direction for the Iranian American community. After four years of bigotry, discrimination, and racist immigration policies, President Biden has begun to turn the page. But, there is still much work to do. Below you will see a letter that we sent U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on what other immigration barriers remain in place for Iranian and their families. As the Secretary begins his review of existing State Department policies, we will work to ensure that our community’s priorities are considered. We will make sure that not only are the previous administration’s harmful policies reversed, but will work to make our immigration system becomes more equitable and just.

“Today, after nearly four years, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief as President Biden takes the reins after four years of chaos and turmoil under Donald Trump. With the start of this new chapter comes the opportunity for the Biden-Harris administration to steer our nation back to an equilibrium defined not by white nationalism and hate, but by equality and respect. We applaud President Biden for upholding this promise and repealing Trump’s bigoted Muslim Ban that ripped us from our loved ones, demonized communities of color, and upended countless lives.”

FAQ on the Muslim Ban: Why A Repeal Is So Important

Since January 27, 2017, when President Trump made good on his campaign promise to impose a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering this country,” tens of thousands of families have been separated from one another solely due to Trump’s bigotry. Since that time, the Iranian-American community and NIAC Action have joined with allies across the nation to fight against the Trump administration’s blatantly discriminatory and unjust ban that has targeted Iranian nationals and deeply impacted countless Iranian Americans.
Diverse Immigrant Groups Warn the House of Pitfalls of Damaging Greencard Legislation

Washington D.C. – Nine organizations have written to the House to warn against the passage of H.R.1044, the so-called Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act, given the harm it would do to immigrant communities while failing to fix the green card backlog. The signers – including Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), National Iranian American Council Action, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) and United Chinese Americans – represent a diverse array of immigrant communities, all of whom would be harmed by the end of country caps without new green cards to clear the existing green card backlog.
