Washington, DC – On May 22, 2026, the National Iranian American Council sent the following letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin expressing concern regarding the recent USCIS announcement that foreign nationals seeking adjustment of status must generally do so from outside of the country, rather than generally allowing foreign nationals to adjust status from within the United States, as has become standard practice.
As stated in the letter, “This policy, if applied to Iranians, would impose disproportionate hardship in light of both current hostilities involving the U.S. and Iran as well as the lack of consular services within Iran.”
