Statement ahead of Iran’s 2024 Presidential Elections

In three days, another election will be held in Iran. Particularly since 1997, Iranians have pursued various approaches to the elections in order to achieve a better life. They have worked and sacrificed to make the best decisions with minimal resources and under intense pressures.

It is up to Iranians to decide whether participating in this Friday’s presidential election is worthwhile. We urge those outside Iran to listen, rather than attempt to speak for the Iranian people, as Iranians choose whether to vote, boycott, protest, or make their voice heard some other way. 

We must be respectful of the means by which those choices are expressed. Iran’s elections are neither free nor fair, but that does not mean Iranians cannot decide for themselves what is the best approach to take. Nobody inside nor outside Iran has the right to deny Iranians their own agency or dictate what they are supposed to believe or do. 

جمعه ۸ تیر انتخابات دیگری در ایران برگزار می‌شود. ایرانیان از دوم خرداد سال ۷۶ تاکنون رویکردهای متفاوتی در مواجهه با انتخابات برگزیده‌اند. آنها در همه این سالها به روشهای مختلف، با حداقل منابع و تحت فشارهای شدید داخلی و خارجی برای دستیابی به زندگی بهتر فداکارانه کوشیده‌اند.

واضح است که انتخابات در ایران نه آزاد و نه عادلانه است. اما این به معنای ناتوانی ایرانیان در تصمیم‌گیری برای خود نیست. تشخیص مشارکت یا عدم مشارکت در انتخابات بر عهده آنهاست.

ما از همه  کسانی که از خارج ایران این انتخابات را دنبال می‌کنند؛ می‌خواهیم که به جای سخن گفتن از جانب مردم ایران؛ به آنها گوش کنند. ایرانیان شایسته و سزاوار اخذ تصمیم‌های مهم برای خود هستند. آنها به خوبی می‌دانند که چگونه صدایشان را به گوش حاکمیت برسانند. هیچ کس حق ندارد عاملیت ملت ایران را انکار کند یا به جای آنها تصمیم بگیرد.
