Washington D.C. – Jamal Abdi, President of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), issued the following statement following the Senate’s passage of H.Con.Res.86:
“This vote is a warning shot to the war lobby: the political space for resuming the war with Iran has completely closed. After months of devastation and mounting costs, it is increasingly clear that the public has zero appetite for restarting a conflict and wants this issue resolved at the negotiating table.”
Today’s 50-48 passage of H.Con.Res.86 in the Senate, which retained the support of four Republican Senators, represents a symbolic but meaningful win for efforts to check further escalation toward war with Iran. It reflects growing bipartisan concern in Congress and a broader shift toward greater scrutiny of military escalation and its consequences.
It also comes after the administration responded to the war’s deep unpopularity by rightly moving to end it and pivoting toward a diplomatic track through the Memorandum of Understanding. That shift underscores how sustained public pressure and political opposition to escalation have created space for de-escalation and renewed engagement.
At the center of this moment are the voices that have consistently opposed the war and demanded a different path, including the Iranian-American community. Their advocacy, alongside broader public opposition, has made clear that there is no mandate for renewed war, and that diplomacy must remain the priority going forward.
